Moss stitches (Part 4 – The knitting series)

by Rita Azar on February 15, 2013

Welcome back to the knitting series.  The first part of the series was casting on, the second part was knit stitches and the third part was purl stitchesDid you give knitting a try?  Come back next week to learn how to cast off.

Today, we are doing moss stitches which is a combination of knit stitches and purl stitches on the same row.

Moss stitches

First, do a knit stitch.  Let’s do a recap.  Hold with your left hand the knitting needle with the stitches and, with the right hand, the other knitting needle.  On the right hand side, there is the ball of yarn.  Insert the knitting needle in the right hand in the first stitch on the left-hand needle.  Note that the yarn is positioned under the right-hand needle.

Moss stitch 1

Bring the yarn in between the knitting needles.

Moss stitch 2

Bring the knitting needle in the right hand and the yarn you just put in between the needles in the hole of the first stitch.

Moss stitch 3

Drop the stitch on the left-hand needle.  You have now one stitch on the right-hand needle.

Moss stitch 4

The next stitch will be a purl stitch.  Pass the yarn over the right-hand needle.

Here’s another recap of how to do a purl stitch.

Moss stitch 5

Insert the knitting needle in the right hand in the first stitch, over the left-hand needle.

Moss stitch 6

Turn the yarn one time over the right-hand needle.

Moss stitch 7

Pull the yarn gently toward you and bring the knitting needle in the right hand and the yarn you just turned over this needle in the hole of the first stitch.

Moss stitch 8

Drop the stitch on the left-hand needle.  You have now two stitches on the right-hand needle.

Moss stitch 9

Bring back the yarn under the right-hand needle.  The next one will be a knit stitch.

Moss stitch 10

Continue to alternate the yarn over the right-hand needle for the purl stitches and under the right-hand needle for the knit stitches for all the remaining stitches on the left-hand needle.

This is the first row; 14 stitches are now on the right-hand needle.

Moss stitch 11

Hold the needle with all the stitches in the left hand and repeat.

At the first lesson, there was 14 stitches cast on.  So, here, the last stitch of the row was a purl stitch.  So, the first stitch on the second row, will be a knit stitch and all rows will start with a knit stitch.

Let’s do it again for the second row.  Do a knit stitch.

Moss stitch 12

Pass the yarn over the right-hand needle.

Moss stitch 13

Do a purl stitch.

Moss stitch 14

Bring back the yarn under the right-hand needle and do a knit stitch.

Moss stitch 15

Continue to alternate the yarn over the right-hand needle for the purl stitches and under the right-hand needle for the knit stitches for all the remaining stitches on the left-hand needle.

This is the second row; 14 stitches are now on the right-hand needle.

Moss stitch 16

Hold the needle with all the stitches in the left hand and repeat this technique again for all the stitches and create new rows.

The Knitting Series will be back next week with casting off.

I am possibly the worlds worst knitter, and am lucky that my MIL has amazing skill. Your tutorial looks easy enough for even me, I’ll let you know how I go!

Hi Rita, well, I am inching closer. The friend I was away with at the weekend had her knitting bag with her. I did mean to have a poke about and a play with her needles… but the beach was too strong a lure and we collapsed with the kids to watch movies at night. But inching closer!!

I haven’t given it a go but I know where to come when I do – as I’ve said before I can kind of knit – just don’t have the time these days. Your posts are very easy to understand though and if I WAS following them they would be great – Em
