Wordless Wednesday – World Interfaith Harmony Week

by Rita Azar on February 5, 2013

Last Saturday, the Multicultural Women’s Sewing Group where I do volunteering work held one of its six yearly events called Faith, Food, and Fabric Fun.  These events focus on discovering and understanding different faiths and cultures.

This one was about the World Interfaith Harmony Week, an initiative of the United Nation to promote harmony between all people regardless of their religion.

World Interfaith Harmony Week 5

There was music, dancing, a puppet show and a craft activity.  We invited people to write messages of love and peace in their own language and in English on a piece of fabric.  We then hanged these messages on a tree.

World Interfaith Harmony Week 1

We also invited people to write their stories about how they practice their faith.  I wrote some of these stories if people had limited English.

World Interfaith Harmony Week 6

And, we always share delicious food.

World Interfaith Harmony Week 2

World Interfaith Harmony Week 4

It was a great day and it was interesting to meet people from different backgrounds and share with them about where they come from.

Have you heard about the World Interfaith Harmony Week?

I respect people who do volunteering work. I am a volunteer too. There is nothing like helping and giving time to support others. Great initiative to help women who don’t know well the new country where they are living. I already passed by this hard time and for this reason I like to help others. Thank you Rita for this post. Continue!

Volunteering work is rewarding in so many ways. These women who come to the Sewing Group often have no one here and came to Australia to give a better future to their children. It’s great to be able to help them. There’s a teacher that teach them how to sew and they can come to the group to practice their English and socialise with other women.

People really enjoyed doing it. It was good to see them looking for inspiration and writing their messages.

What a wonderful initiative! Great work you’re doing there. I admit world peace is a great pursuit and all- but international smorgasbord is unbeatable ;) :P

It’s a beautiful initiative! The Sewing Group is also doing a great work toward multiculturalism. These are free events and open to everyone.
