Knit stitches (Part 2 – The knitting series)

by Rita Azar on January 25, 2013

Welcome to the second part of The knitting series – Knit stitches.  The series started last week with casting onDid you give it a try?  I would love to hear from you.  Come back next week to learn how to make purl stitches but, for the moment, let’s start the tutorial.

Hold with your left hand the knitting needle with the stitches and, with the right hand, the other knitting needle.  On the right hand side, there is the ball of yarn.  Insert the knitting needle in the right hand in the first stitch on the left-hand needle.

Knit stitches 1

Bring the yarn in between the knitting needles.

Knit stitches 2

Bring the knitting needle in the right hand and the yarn you just put in between the needles in the hole of the first stitch.

Knit stitches 4

Knit stitches 5

Drop the stitch on the left-hand needle.  You have now one stitch on the right-hand needle.

Knit stitches 7

Repeat this technique again for the remaining 13 stitches of the left-hand needle.

This is the first row; 14 stitches are now on the right-hand needle.

Knit stitches 8
Hold the needle with all the stitches in the left hand and repeat.

Let’s do it again.  Here, I’m knitting the second stitch on the second row.  Insert the knitting needle in the right hand in the second stitch on the left-hand needle.

Knit stitches 9

Bring the yarn in between the knitting needles.

Knit stitches 10

Bring the knitting needle in the right hand and the yarn you just put in between the needles in the hole of the second stitch.

Knit stitches 11

Drop the stitch on the left-hand needle.  You have now two stitches on the right-hand needle.

Knit stitches 12

Repeat this technique again for the remaining 12 stitches of the left-hand needle.

This is the second row; 14 stitches are now on the right-hand needle.

Knit stitches 13

Hold the needle with all the stitches in the left hand and repeat this technique again for all the stitches and create new rows.

Don’t forget to come back next Friday to learn how to make purl stitches.

Please, leave me a comment telling me if my explanations are clear or if you have any questions you would like me to answer regarding knitting.

I must confess to now having done any knitting and not even having bought knitting needles BUT these posts are bookmarked for the future when… anything could happen!

Great photographs Rita! How do you manage to take them?

It was tricky Min. I held the needles in one hand and the camera/Iphone with the other. In one of them, the needles are on the table.

Rita,
I am saving all these tutorials, I am counting on you to get me past my crooked scarf knitting. My last knitting experience was a disaster but as soon as I have time I want to try again. I took up crochet last year and am addicted.

I don’t know how to crochet but I really want to learn. What kind of stitches did you made for your scarf? Let me know if I can help.

Oh, Rita! Well done! You’ve inspired me to take up knitting! I did it once as a primary school kid and loved it. Maybe there’s a second chance for me :)
